I got this same error just a month into my brand new 2012 520d back when I took delivery. After much investigation and software resets etc, BMW ended up shipping a new transmission to my dealer, who replaced the faulty one. Yes, the whole damn thing.
While I hope you don't have the same issue, be prepared for the worst. FWIW, the error never occurred again.
