My 335 did not do this. No other car I've ever had did this. A slight pause for downshift is fairly common but less these days with modern transmissions, but this is like a dead spot waiting for that downshift. $85k car with all that power, and they couldn't get this right? BMW? It's insane and infuriating, at times.
I agree with this, kickdown is lethargic, especially in Comfort mode. Test drove a 650 and noticed the same behavior. You're right about when the power does come on it's like the solid rocket boosters lit on the space shuttle giving you WAY TOO MUCH power causing all kinds of fun as you warp speed right up someones bumper. BMW failed on the transmission programming on this engine. I think they thought that the engine has so much torque and power that they could get away with a more comfort oriented transmission programming. I didn't notice quite the kickdown lag when I test drove the 528, transmission programming was much better suited to that engine.

If I need the power right now, I usually use the paddles to downshift manually which allows me to have better control of the power.
