ok....but what about 540d , a 3.5 or 4.0 V8......audis have V12 btw
Well, considering the engine policy of BMW I would say they cancelled the v8 diesel (read some news in a german car magazine). First they can easily rise a 35d to the hp of the 40d with better fuel economy and less weight. Second they have never put a v8 diesel into the 5series (just 7series) and due to the critical times these days I guess they never will. The Audi V12 Diesel is just for marketing purposes. Not really necessary and as far as I know just planned to be built into the Q7.

550i and M5 appear to have same engines...not sure about that , M5 will most likely be 5.2 or 4.9 V10 bi turbo because I think this time they will go with the torque , not power
The engine of the 550i and the M5 is not the same. They just share the same displacement and injection-technique. The engine of the M5 is developped by the M division and not just a powered up version of the 50i engine. Of course it has a higher output then a 550i.
