I had the rattling gremlin that seemed to be from the dash on my E60, it drove me crazy
. I would be driving and slapping the dash to see if it would stop. My wifey swears it came from the passenger side of the dash whereas I kept hearing it from behind the iDrive monitor. I started stripping the cup-holders and then the entire glove compartment and then the iDrive screen and the rattling just didn't go away.
At the dealer's, they managed to solve it in less than 20 mins
and the gremlin was caught beneath the bonnet - a tubing hitting on a metallic part of the power steering oil reservior!!
You might want to look further away from what you thought could be the source of the rattling - happy trouble-shooting!
