BMW is working on the Laser headlight. They are 1000x better than the current LED lighting technology. Therefore, in a way, everyone else has fallen behind.
Tentatively, BMW predicts the Laser headlight technology will make into production in about 3 years time.
Just wondering which model will get it first ? It may be the next generation 5 series ... which should be due out in 2017
