$18000 out of pocket for a new car after three years of ownership and 31,000 miles doesn't seem crazy. Even if you make it a new 550 with a higher out of pocket cost, the numbers seem reasonable. You couldn't sell the car (if it was working) and net this much.
At the same time this is a terrible situation and should not happen. You are justified in being disillusioned and distrustful.
All manufacturers make lemons. You can find people with issues such as this in all forums. Doesn't make it right for sure but I don't think BMW is any better or worse.
Hope you get this resolved. Sounds like the best financial out is through BMW - hopefully your next car - whatever it is - is worry free.
