Looks aside, I just don't get the current obsession with this material in auto industry, whether it's used on seats or steering wheels (or both)

This is just personal opinion of course, I know lots of luxury and exotic cars these days come with alacantara. I'd take (even lower quality) leather on my steering wheels and seats over alacantara in a heartbeat. For looks, ease of maintenance and long term durability.
