Depending on how your drive, and where you drive, both the X5 and the GT are big, heavy vehicles...starting and stopping them messes with the fuel economy. While you'd probably get better mileage on the GT, it may or may not be a lot better. The diesel is much better at around-town, since it sips much less fuel during idle, and is better overall.
