I have never tried AS on an E60, but IAS on the F10 sounds like essentially the same thing. Speed dependent variable ratio steering with the addition of 4-wheel steering. Whether you have IAS or not, I believe the steering is via an electric steering motor regardless in the F10.

My 535i includes the IAS and I really like it. But it isn't for everyone.

IAS Pros:
- Lowers the amount you have to move the steering wheel to turn the car at all speeds.
- Better handling in the twisties from the 4-wheel steering
- Smaller turning radius at low speeds

IAS Negatives:
- Extra complexity, something more to go wrong.
- "Boosts" the steering more. Maybe a little less feel than non-IAS cars.
- Makes alignment more expensive and tricky.
