Eh I wouldn't say it is "common" enough that you should expect it. But it isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you were at a low RPM you could have been at a high load the whole time, so yeah the turbos/cats could have gotten pretty hot and burnt off any dirt or grease that was on them that hadn't burned off already. If you've had the car worked on recently it could be leftover from that.
