IMO it's easy to differentiate the current 3 / 5 / 7 series. With BMW, it seems there is an external design philosophy of similarities between the models (the 5 GT being the notable exception), but to my eyes, they are quite clearly distinct. I can see an F10 vs F01 from 150 yards in my rear view mirror.
With Audi, there is a jelly mould / russian doll design philosophy in their current design model, for the A4 / A6 / A8, with regards to the overall body shape and lines on the cars. The design, to my eyes anyway, seems to carry through all of these models, in a more linear "bigger size" way. The main differentiator being the shape of the lights / LED pattern. If it works for them, than there is nothing wrong with that philosophy. For me, I want the model range to share the stable of design, but be individual in it's own right.
All said IMO.
