It is because of the exhaust manifolds. The N63 motor has the typical layout of the turbos, one dedicated to each bank's exhaust ports. The S63 is a cross bank exhaust manifold designed to reduce the turbo lag. This impacts the exhaust pulses significantly. which would change the tone. That is why the AMG's sound more vicious compared to the M cars. They are setup just like the N63 motor with turbos on each bank's exhaust port.
