Years ago I subscribed to the old-school principle of early and frequent oil changes and there are many who still do. However, considering that BMW probably don't want to end up with a reputation for lubrication related engine failure, I personally adhere to their recommendations.
If you decide to go ahead, the approved oil spec, as clearly defined on page 269 of your owner's handbook , is BMW Longlife-04/Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40: http://www.castrol.com/castrol/produ...tentId=7027069
