The coupler will collapse under suction. That is why the BMS one is a solid hard pipe with a filter. I went down this road long ago on my Mitsubishi evo. I thought it was genius and a saved a penny. Until I put the car on the dyno and could see the coupler collapsing under wot.
When it is collapsed it will obviously be restrictive.
