Rather than starting a new DYI, here is what I learned. You can get the inserts out relatively easily. Use a good adhesive remover and a small flat screwdriver. The catch in the front is small. Start there and slowly work your way back. Be careful. It's still unsure if you can get the inserts individually or if you have to purchase an entire handle assembly if one breaks. I will update with the adhesive I used when I get the parts back from paint.
