While it is clearly up to ones own taste, needs, budget, I chose the 550 for many reasons. One that stands out is it's proven record. To me, the X6 is just a fad that will wear out -- I already have one of those (Z3). The 5 series is a classic. Also, a lot of my friends own SUVs/SAVs.
