Thanks Stück, but just received the below to the same query on another forum, so a bit confused now. :|
"Axel removal require the axels to pulled out as they slide into the rear diff. So yes the rotors and brake pads as well as calipers will need to be removed you can probably remove one caliper bolt and swing it out the way but since your there you might as well take them off to keep them out of the way."
