Personally I don't see the 535i and 535d as comparisons.
Here in the UK, the 530d and 535i are virtually the same cost to buy and very close on performance.
Model: 530d M Sport
OTR Price: £42,120
Performance (hp): 258
Acceleration 0-62 mph (sec) 6.1 (6.0)
Acceleration 50-75 mph in 4th (sec) 5.0
Model: 535i M Sport
OTR Price: £42,255
Performance (hp): 306
Acceleration 0-62 mph (sec) 5.8 (5.9)
Acceleration 50-75 mph in 4th (sec) 5.9
The 535d is a different price point and definitely a step ahead on performance. BMW numbering is where I see the issue. 530i is nearly £3,500 cheaper than 530d and is lower on performance. 535i ought to be the 530i, IMO, and a more powerful petrol engine for the 535i. After all there is almost £3,750 to play with, even when you add the auto to get to 535d spec'. At present BMW seem to be sitting the 5-series petrol models in between the diesels, not as direct comparisons.
