We do have a proliferation of cycle lanes, but in many rural areas there is no alternative to the car. All things considered though, buses are probably the most common and cheapest alternative. I could do virtually all my travelling via buses, and it would definatley be cheaper for me than driving, however, it would also involve quite a lot of walking, and buses don't tend to be very direct. If I drive to the next town it takes me about 15 minutes, and costs £5-6 return in fuel... I can do it on the bus for £3.20 return, but its a 15 min walk to the bus stop, and a 40 minute bus journey whilst it meanders it's way around the other stops.
