Two years later
Still only averaging 37mpg. It seems the topography has a Lot to do with efficiency on these cars.
The 520d does not like hills. On the flat or approx 60mph you will get the 50 mpg and more.
However if Like me your daily drive includes two sets of hill before destination the 520d will start to suffer.
Also it seems the slower you go the better the mpg. The inverse is also true. Anything over 80mph and efficiency drops considerably.
In summary hills and heavy foot expect mid thirtys
Crawl on the flat and expect mid 50's. There's a huge variance.
