As Martin says, it largely depends on your annual milage.
I went from a 535d F10 to a 640i F12 and much prefer the petrol. Ok, it doesn't have that amazing torque but it's very free revving and, IMO, more throttle responsive, not to mention that glorious exhaust note and silky smooth idle.
My last 640i had done about 33k miles when I traded it in for my new one and I was getting 35mpg on long runs.
