Oh another important thing is emergency maneuvers. Yes, AWD will be a bit more forgiving than RWD if you want to stab the throttle aimlessly and tumble end over end... but since you're looking at M5s, I assume you have at least a baseline of performance driving skills, which are exaggerated in snow.
I have done "stupid" things both in my S8 and my 525i in the snow (by stupid I mean behaving 15 years younger than I should have in large cars). I always knew the performance envelope of each given car so that in that instance where you needed maximum performance for a correction or whatnot, you knew where you stood. Coincidently, the best snow car (regular car) that I've owned was a 240sx with AS... very predictable and balanced at all speeds. I have accidentally drifted that car too on a snowy highway at 70mph.... as long as you have your wits about you, it rewarded you.
