Take the advice from the guys on here that have experienced the same problem with the same equipment, including the advice of being weary of the shop you've been going to. Like many have said, if the shop isn't pulling the faults stored in the car's computers, then they don't know what they're doing.

I would expect the carbon buildup still to be an issue on our newer engines. This is a problem with direct injection in general, not just BMW. If you pull off our intake components you will see some oil from the CCV system, and that oil is definitely making it to the valves. If it was easier I would definitely have it done on my 60k+ N63 and would expect to see buildup for sure.
