Confusing? Yewbetcha.
I think for the N55 it may be a single 'twin-scroll' turbo system and the redesigned exhaust manifold which divides into two three cylinder sections to feed the turbo. Could be mistaken though. Supposed to improve the breathing. The N57S which I have on my X6 is the 3.0D powerplant with two differently sized turbos to give 306bhp and mated to the ZF 8sp auto. My Dealer told me the 40d had a single twin-scroll system but when I popped the hood at delivery there were two blowers sitting there waiting to play . Whether they are both twin scroll I have yet to discover.

No manual available as the engine won't pass the emission regs and is supposed to be more economical in auto too. All I know is it goes like the wind for a 2-tonne wagon with a top speed approaching 150mph - Yipe!!
