2010 BMW 5 Series to receive V8TT from X6

Over the past several months, spy photographers have managed to capture plenty of images of the upcoming 2010 BMW 5-series. While the shots have given us an overall idea of what to expect from the next-generation 5-series — both inside and out — we didn't exactly know what would be under the hood of the new sedan. But thanks to a new report, we have a little more info.

When the new 5-series finally bows — likely in 2010 — it will be available with the same twin-turbo V8 found in the X6, says BMWBlog.com. Just as in X6-guise, the twin-turbo V8 will make about 400 horsepower in the 5-series — which would put it in the same neighborhood as BMW's E39 M5.

It is also believed that the base 5-series will come equipped with the same twin-turbo six found in the BMW 335i and 135i.

Design of the sixth generation 5-series — codenamed F10 — is being overseen by BMW’s head designer, Adrian van Hooydonk. Unfortunately, the heavy camouflage of this test car hides most of the car's details.

The next-generation 5-series is expected to feature an eight-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel drive option being available. A range of engines will be available in the 5-series and wagon and M5 versions will follow about a year after the car's initial introduction.

Outside of the M5, the next-generation 5-series will be available with a wide range of engines — including four, six and eight cylinder engines — although only the twin-turbo six and eight-cylinder engines are expected to make it to the U.S.

The new 5 will also have Park Distance Control and an around view monitor system, similar to Infiniti's Around View Monitor.
