I agree it does seem to be the trend that car designers are moving towards. My guess is:

1. Baby boomers are getting older and do not need the big SUV's anymore.
2. We are used to the big SUV's and don't want to give up the carrying space.
3. These cars appeal to our younger side (think guy in the hot car in high school).

Just my 2 cents worth. I personally think that cars along this line are going to be the next big hot item.
