Anyone used this tool? Does the whole thing come out exposing the wires? If so is it easy to remove the socket and once removed do you have enough clearance to solder some wires in the back of the socket?
At this price I'd really want to know if it is possible to do what I want before parting with my hard earned money

Very easy 5 seconds job. This is the one of the first step in removing the console. Just grab and pull the whole from from top. Total of 6 clips, strong one. I don't think you can break it.
Instructions from BMW;
-> Open storage compartment lid (1).
-> Starting at the top, unclip the cover of the centre console (2) toward the rear.
Do not use any tools in this step, it would damage the edge of the trim.
Only your fingers with firm pull.
