Yes this is done by some strange German scientists which develop brown chestnuts for the automotive industrie, because this color is cheaper to mix then the red one!

It's the color of the leaf. If you look on chestnuts in the fall, the leaf can have different colors. Early fall they are more red and later it points more to brown. The basis für "KastanienBRAUN" ist brown ("BRAUN") and the basis for "KastanienROT" is red ("ROT"). So nothing strange here...
