Cause it's an option (and a free one!) when ordering the car. In Europe we have those long lists of options and this one is particularly popular.

If you ask why people tick that option so often, you'd get different responses, but more or less the most common is the car looks more beautiful without the badge. I don't have a model designation badge for the same reason on the back of my F10, whereas I kept my badge proudly on my E91.

I think a lot of people are also trying to hide they're driving a 520d or an E200 CDI nowadays, especially when you see how many of those are company cars in Europe and how hard it is for a guy that doesn't know BMW to differentiate a 520d from anything other than an M5, 550i and 535i/d.
