The fact new 5-series front end could look similar to the 7 is regulatory. In Europe, they have new pedestrian impact requirements that basically force the hand of stylists. The front end has to be higher so it hits a pedestrian higher which apparently causes less damage.
I am no expert, but this has been coming and BMW wont make a US only design, so we have to deal with this European requirement.
