I had an E39 540i touring for over four years, thought it would be hard to follow such a complete car. E61 didn't match it in my opinion. Had an E91 330d touring for six years, now back in a 5-series. Mine is a July 2011 build F11 535i touring, includes Adaptive Drive, and running 18" wheels.
No issues with steering, ride or anything else, the best BMW I've ever driven, matches and surpasses the E39 in virtually every way, IMO. Just that bit bigger, which is the way next generation models go.
Not sure how large the steering pull and vibration issues really were, but I'd surely hope they are sorted by now.
