reason why I ask is just a concern if its possible that a driver can forget the auto start/stop feature shut off the car instead of the driver, and possibly start up again with the driver out the car. Can this potentially cause accidents?

1) Are you planning to put the car in Park first of just activate the brake and let your foot off?
2) Are you planning to put the car in Park before you open the door and exit the vehicle?
If yes to both, then you are ok and the car will stay shut off. However, if the answer is no, then I have not tried these scenarios (and have no reason to)
