Actually, on MB (I had a 2006 CLS500 when I lived in L.A. a month ago) it would have been covered under warranty if it happened before the 50k miles. Shocks are fine... It's the air bladder that develop leaks and it just happens that they are one unit so they have to replace it completely. I say that BMW does the same. I also assume that they are as expensive as the MB's. The repair is fairly easy but the dealers pad the price quite a bit. You heard of that?
My brother in law owns an autoshop in south L.A. so he just charged me the wholesale cost of the unit and free labor. He basically saved me about $2k.
I wasn't very happy that it went out 5 days before selling the car to come to Chile.
