In the case of the Z4, X3, X5, and X6 between 70 and 95% of the value of the parts content come from NON US or Canadian sources. Perhaps adding US/CDN content would improve the quality (hint: High Pressure Fuel Pump). Honda and Toyota have effectively become Domestic manufacturers by sourcing at least 60% of the value of the content of Accords and Camrys built in the US from suppliers that manufacture in the US/Canada.

When I did the factory tour our tour guide told us that BMW sources robots exclusively from Kuka (
http://www.kuka-robotics.com/en/) and that they not only assemble, but just as a human would do, mechanically or visually align parts prior to installation. BMW's philosophy was to harmonize the work of man and machine, utilizing robots for high precision, dangerous/hazardous and repetitive tasks.
