I had it that way on my E60 and it drove me crazy 'cause our M5 has SMG which is down on left and up on right. I had to constantly remind myself which car I was driving, and it caused some embarrassing situations..........
I use my paddles a lot. The only time I keep in in regular automatic is if there is a lot of traffic.
