I made the same move -- 2011 535ix to a 2014 535d xDrive. Gas mileage averaged around 23mpg (70/30 highway/local) in the 2011 (using 91 octane) and while the 2014 is far from broken in, my first 600 miles have gotten me about 35mpg with a similar split on the first tank.

Power-wise, I think they're pretty equal. Not sure I agree with AVIMAX on being less peppy - I tend to drop the transmission into sport before jumping on the accelerator, but will take more notice. On my 535ix, there was a definite lag between hitting the gas and the car pouncing -- told my service guys and they said it was normal, but I thought it was BS. Dropping the transmission into S-mode took care of that. But the car has a sweet growl and you can hear the power when it takes off. ... and the looks at the diesel pump ARE amazing Audi's new commercial for their diesel hits the topic spot-on.
