From what I know (but 22 is the best person to answer) the software package isn't an update but a complete reloading of the software to a new version - like windows xp to vista. It can only be done at the dealership.

Also, no, as far as I'm aware from discussions with my service guy, it won't be done automatically. You need to have a valid reason for the update (ie jerky behaviour), as BMW service centres get audited and this update costs them significantly.

Things may change though if as you say, it becomes commonplace. So far it doesn't seem to be.
