It's a Nikon D90 with their kit lens, a Nikkor AFS 18-105 3.5-5.6G ED with VR.
I have everything on the camera set to Auto and shoot in aperture priority at the widest F-stop allowable. The camera does a good job of adjusting the shadows and highlights automatically.
While the camera is nice, the important thing for cars is to shoot when it's overcast to prevent it from becoming too contrasty, or shoot just before sunrise or just after sunset.
