Update.
BMW have come back and said a new gearbox needs to be fitted (not surprised, it was quite a dire specimen to be honest!).
Of course, there's no stock in the UK so has to be ordered in from Germany. Due to arrive Monday / Tuesday next week. Allowing for fitting, should have the car back by Wednesday / Thursday next week.
I've been told this is quite unlucky as this is a very rare occurrence.
