Okay, I found the secret sauce. I have gotten it all to work (text and emails) on my October 2010 ( MY 2011 ) build F1.
1. Repair your phone.
2. Go to the Bluetooth menu in your iPhone (under settings).
3. After your device is discovered, click on the device or otherwise click on the arrow to the right on the entry for the device.
4.Slide show notifications to yes.
This all has to take place before you fiddle with idrive.
Now, go setup the idrive part as described in the various threads on this subject.
