BMW is recalling around 12,400 2011 BMW 5-Series sedans in the United States and China to fix a fuel-level sensor, the same issue that it recently recalled the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo for. BMW is recalling 6,400 units of the new 5-Series in the United States and 5,000 to 6,000 units in China. Spokesman Frank Strebe said that replacing a part of the fuel tank sensor will take about half a day.
Strebe said that there have been 10 reported incidents in the United States. NHTSA says the vehicles were built from Jan. 12 to July 1.

Got a call from my dealership that there is recall for the fuel sensor and I need to bring my F10 in. Apparently the car may show that you still have fuel even though your tank is empty. With the pulling to the right and this new issue, been in service 3 times in one month. Potential buyer beware!

Consequence:
IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD DISPLAY A LARGER AMOUNT OF FUEL THAN WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. AS A RESULT, IF THE TANK BECAME EMPTY, THE VEHICLE COULD STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
BMW HAS NOT YET PROVIDED THE AGENCY WITH A REMEDY PLAN AND NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.
