The 535d means effortless power delivery and relaxed cruising.
Like Jon said, You need to work the *35i harder to get the same level of performance. The overall experience is a bit more nervous. IMO the D suits such a big car better.
But, you gotta give both cars a try and see for yourself. The petrol sounds much better that's for sure.
