Only my latest (G6) nano is recognized. My (very old) mini, and Nano G1 are no recognized. Which is a pity, because I like to keep an old ipod in the car, and keep my latest nano elsewhere. Ok, this might be an Apple problem, but it was a disappointment anyways.

This is Apple's fault, not BMW's fault. The wiring is actually different on older iPods. For example, the pins to charge the iPod went from 12V on older iPods to something like 5V on newer ones. And I bet the protocol changed to talk to iPods at some point.
In order to get your older iPods to work, it would break using newer iPods that you can actually purchase today. I think that's a fair trade-off.
Personally, I just keep a flash drive in the car with my music collection. No reason to keep an iPod in the car.
