You have to buy a new sealant container after each use, but not an entire kit.
These kits are not without their downsides, but they're faster and safer than changing a tire on the shoulder. For a catastrophic failure, just call roadside assistance (AAA, tire company,BMW or whatever you have).
The solution somewhat depends on where you live. In areas prone to freeze/thaw cycles, catastrophic failures are more likely. Here in So. Cal, large potholes aren't common, and in my experience (knock on wood), flat tires are rare, so it's just insurance against the occasional puncture where you can't limp home.
