Its not a powerhouse but the 528 never was supposed to be. I went from a sporty e46 330 ZHP and I was surprised that the 5's 4 banger didn't even feel like a downgrade. Its true the engine tone is weak and the idle can sound like a diesel at times but from inside the car where it really matters you can't hear it. I would buy my 528i over the 535 again. If money means something as it did for me the 535 is 6K more and I didn't see paying that for slightly better engine performance. 6K buys some nice options that few people get on their 528/535's.
Though not as fast, my fully loaded 528i on 750Li rims gets a lot more attention than any of the 535's at my work.
As for smoothness, I recommend the comfort+ suspension setting, getting the taller tires of the F01 wheels, and disabling the auto engine stop. My 528 is as smooth as the base 740i I test drove.
