It has been driving me crazy so I made an appointment and I took it to the dealer today ( I had to rearrange my work to allow this to happen). I collected the car a few hours ago and the ticking has become worse. When I say worse I mean it's frequency hasn't changed but it has got louder. I was, more or less, resigned to this when I collected it because they told me they adjusted the belt unit and added "double sided tape!" Can you believe that? BMW aftersales are becoming a real pain in the @$$.
I rest my case - see #7 above

I recommend you do not take it back to the "techs" and either fix it yourself with help from members here or learn to live with it. There was a guy who took his car in for a sunroof squeak and ended up having to install a whole new roof liner which sagged forever thereafter.
