The prestigious Alan Simonsen Pole Trophy, or "The Al"as it is fast becoming known, has been claimed this afternoon by the #15 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 of Laurens Vanthoor, Marco Mapelli and Markus Winkelhock.
Vanthoor (in the GT3 Pro-Am class) laid down an amazing 2m 02.5521 second lap with just three minutes remaining in the session, just before the red flags were flown when the #7 VodkaO Mercedes went into the wall at the Cutting, with the #27 TFM Ferrari Motorsport NZ Ferrari also having to be recovered during that period.
Fastest for the GT3-Am class was the #35 Nismo Athlete Group Nissan GT-R, despite a spin during the session which saw it suffer rear damage at the Cutting.
