Oil temperature gauges do show us the truth about how long a diesel takes to get proper heat into the engine.

From experience with diesel engines, with both coolant and oil temperature gauges, it can take twice as long, or twice the mileage, to get the oil up to temperature, compared to ECT. 16 miles is not uncommon for a diesel's oil to reach 100C a cold day.
