BMW M Tuned 5 Series Diesel (M550d / 550dM / 550dXM ?) Reportedly Confirmed
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW M Tuned 5 Series Diesel (M550d / 550dM / 550dXM ?) Confirmed Following up on earlier rumors, it appears that the M tuned 5-series diesel model has been confirmed. According to Thedetroitbureau and Autoblog, BMW has confirmed that there will indeed be a new diesel F10 tuned by BMW M joining the 5-series lineup. Despite being tuned by BMW M, the F10 diesel M will not receive the "M5" moniker, but will instead be named along the lines of M550d, 550dM, 550dXM, or 550d xDrive M, each a bit of a clumsy name in our opinion. For what it's worth, BMW recently filed a trademark for "M550." The 5-series M diesel will be powered by a triple turbo inline-6 cylinder diesel motor and will be all-wheel-drive only. The sources speculate that it will come in with slightly less power than the F10 M5 (which makes 560hp), somewhere in the 500-550hp (unconfirmed) range. Torque, on the other hand, is speculated to exceed the 500lb-ft of the F10 M5 and could be north of 650lb-ft (unconfirmed). If these figures end up accurate, the AWD xDrive transmission will certainly be needed to put all that power to the ground without excessive loss of traction. The new F10 model will be introduced next spring, but it's not yet known whether this model will be available in North America. Future applications for this new M tuned diesel motor could include the X5, X6 and 7 series. |

I'm not sure anyone would be expecting it to be... but it sounds like a very interesting combination and one that I would surely consider - torque plus x-drive is a win for Canadian weather. This might be the ultimate year-round vehicle...

We'll probably get shafted in the US. We get no diesel love...we were lucky to get the 335d

Can you imagine how much torque these beasts will have. Probably cruise at 120 kph and 1000 rpm.

They had better not put an ///M badge on this...
SUV's, turbo charging engines, now a diesel? They're betraying all the things that made me, and I'm sure pretty much every other true bimmer afficianado, fall in love and reapect the brand... Upsetting..

I disagree. BMW ///M always surprises us with the great engineering. Maybe I should just say BMW. Just look at the new M5 and the i8. M5 got V8 Twin PowerTurbo 560hp, and guess what? base on the information on BMW.com, it has got 31 mpg on highway! Does it drive like an M car, I believe so. i8 gets about 90 mpg, 0-60 mph in 4.6sec. I mean, really, BMW has done a lot break throughs. I still remember the first time I drove 335d, that was just amazing. I couldn't believe that's a diesel. The new 640d is even better. It is just 0.1 dec slower than 640i 0-62mph. I think most ppl are with me so far. The sad thing is they don't bring that much diesel to the US. BTW, I am a true BMW aficionado. Bimmer all the way
