I believe that it is on every model except the euro 520d.
Additionally I have noticed that the chrome bar in the door handle present on every model again except the 520d is restored, when the "ambient lighting" is specified as an option.

In Eurpoe you don't get illuminated door sills on the 520D sports, I'm not sure about the bigger size engins.

Unless you are getting a cream or other light coloured interior it's a waste of time IMO. I have a black interior and you can hardly notice it even when you have the light intensity at max.

I can second that. I went from a dakota beige to a black interior, and it went from this great museum effect to a "I have to look away from the dash display and wait for my eyes to adjust" situation to even notice it's there. Bummer.

By the way, are you suggesting that the ambient light level changes with the display light adjustment for the dashboard elements?

Yes you can. When you use the dimmer to adjust the instrument cluster light intensity your ambience lights adjust as well.

Ah, Well, in the case of the black interior this is a self-defeating adjustment, as it were. The increased luminosity of the instrument cluster makes it even harder to see the ambiance effect.

Can they be turned off? I've ordered a car with white interior and from the pictures above, I think it looks a little odd to have a pinkish hue.

I haven't seen a way to turn them off. I will try to get a picture of them in my black-on-black-on-black 535 and post tonight (Eastern US time).

It's an orange hue not pinkish. Matches the dash lighting. Your screen might not be correctly calibrated if it looks pinkish to you.

The hue is only at night time. During the day the ambience lighting is switched off.

Just think of it as the hue that you see at night in aircraft cockpits and ship/super-yacht bridges to avoid affecting night vision.

It's rather cool!

I agree, I have Black interior, even when dark, I tried to make it stand out more by closing sun roof but with no effect. it is simply weakened by the black interior, mind you a second time around I still go for the option.

No, the dark interior seems to absorb more of the light, rather than reflect it. If I can get off my duff at some point and take pictures, you'll be able to see the difference relative to the pictures above in the thread.

I have tried twice now to take pictures, but it's so dark in the car that the ambiance doesn't even register on my (admittedly crappy) EVO camera. Obviously, using a flash is not an option (and makes my interior look blue, that's some quality camera in there).

I'll have to grab the wife's camera and see if I can do any better with it. Maybe an early evening shot.

I thought the same when ordering the option, I thought with black interior it will have like a neon effect, it will be more of a line in red, on road trip this last weekend my wife though the same i.e. not too bright, yet one other evening it was somehow brighter so some variance depending on the darkness and all.
For the interior option Black rules, for me it was due to the dash board also taking the color you order, in my previous E60 I went for brown leather but the dashboard and centre console stayed in black, this give the Alum a nice contrast, for this reason along when down to the F10 black was my choice, and of course with 2 kids in the back.
Back on lights, my advise still go for it, it is unique to the F10, do check if you like the chrome on the door handles, my car is 520d M sport Imperial Blue with chrome surrounding the windows and the door handles, nice combination, they stand out nicely with the dark blue exterior color.

I upload a photo for you, hopefully it may help, I try to do this in an hour or 2.
